We recommend Edna in the Desert for: * YA readers at the lower end of the age bracket looking for a gentle introduction to the romance genre * veteran readers of YA contemporary who don’t mind a youngish protagonist * readers who like a funny, gentle coming-of-age tale of any description This book introduces us to thirteen-year-old Edna as she is being forcibly removed by her parents to the aforementioned desert, to live with her grandparents for the summer. This exile follows a spate of less-than-becoming behaviour from young Edna, and when she discovers her parents dastardly plot (as...

A terrific review from Loving The Language of Literacy. *Maddy Lederman sent me Edna in the Desert which does not in the slightest affect my honest review.* My Background: So if anybody remembers how I was saying in my New Years Resolutions post that I had signed up for ever blog tour under the sun, and felt overwhelmed because of it? Well, I had been very hesitant in accepting Maddy’s request because I didn’t want to overload myself, but I definitely made the right decision in doing so because this is one of the best coming-of-age and most relatable book I...

Edna In The Desert: A thoughtful review by The Eclectic Bookworm I readily identified with Edna. I still have my old journals from when I was a teenager and Ms. Lederman accurately captures the mindset of an adolescent female. This book is very well written as well. The author beautifully describes an environment that I have never been to. I really want to go now. From the physical attributes to the heat to the wildlife, Ms. Lederman captures it all. I really appreciate when the author removes you from your world and places you into theirs. Ms. Lederman also accurately portrays that first...

Edna in the Desert by Maddy Lederman Currently $4.99 on Amazon My review: I will admit, at first I was put off by the disagreeable main character of Ms. Lederman’s story, Edna. I wasn’t sure how this book and I would get along. Would I arrive at a sour teenager who redeems herself or not allow myself to get there; frustrated and closing the book, unable to take her unpleasantries, along with her grouchy grandparents for another page? Edna made me roll my eyes and for a brief moment I wanted her to die out there in that desert. Ms. Lederman writes her...

Published Jan. 23, 2014 by The Book Landers Rating: 5-STAR Wow…this book was an unexpected gem 🙂 The story of Edna (main character) is probably something we can all somehow relate to, one way or another. Edna’s a rebellious young teen; she doesn’t act “rebellious” or “rude” on purpose…she just can’t seem to help wanting to up-one everyone she meets. And I must say, Maddy Lederman really nailed the voice of a somewhat arrogant (but doesn’t know she is) 13 year old–trust me, I speak from experience, as I know a person going through the “rebel teen” phase right now, lol....

The Story Sanctuary names Edna In The Desert one of “Five Small Press/Indie Titles You Won’t Want To Miss” From The Story Sanctuary. Jan 13, 2014 Edna In The Desert, by Maddy Lederman “Lederman creates a memorable cast of characters, each unique and fascinating. As a parent, it’s frightening to witness Edna’s cool confidence and mastery at manipulation. One wants to slap them all the way to parenting classes. Edna’s grandmother is probably the most complex and interesting character of the cast. The narrative is peppered with truly insightful moments, though frequent ricochets from one character’s deep point-of-view to another’s sometimes...

Thirteen year-old Edna is out of control, and her wealthy, indulged parents are out of ideas for how to handle her. As a last-ditch effort to reform their daughter, Edna’s parents drop her off at an isolated cabin in the desert with only her stoic grandmother and Vietnam veteran grandfather for company. Furious, Edna pulls out all her most manipulative, most challenging behaviors, but this time they have no effect. She is left with no choice but to survive the next two months...

The following was printed in the Brooklyn Daily Eagle, Nov. 19, 2013. Writer and Brooklyn resident Maddy Lederman has recently released her debut novel, “Edna in the Desert,” which is now available at The Community Bookstore in Park Slope. The coming of age tale chronicles a tech-addicted teen stranded at her grandparents’ cabin in the Mojave Desert without cell phone service, Internet or television. “It’s ‘Real Housewives of Beverly Hills’ meets ‘Little House on The Prairie,’” Lederman explains. “The idea came to me after I did an interview with a couple in Wonder Valley, about 30 miles from Joshua Tree, Cali. They...

Lena Nelson Dooley is an award-winning, multi-published Christian novelist and screeenwriter. November 21, 2013 Readers, here’s another debut novelist. Hi, Lena. Thanks for having me on your blog! What has drawn you to writing for the YA market? I wanted to write a warm, amusing story about how a modern teenager would react to being totally unplugged. Some of my friends’ kids don’t even look up from their phones to say hello, and I wonder where this is taking our culture. My character, Edna, is thirteen, so the YA market was naturally drawn to my book, but I wasn’t drawn to...
